This has been some cause for concern with new CS grads not understanding the relationships between hardware and software. When I was in College, it was FORTRAN for all Engineers. CS students would go on to learn C and Assembly afterwards. In later math and physics courses, one could write code in either C or FORTRAN to solve problems. Those in the Business School used Visual Basic 3/4.
